UX case study
The problem: overcrowding, uneven frequency and last-mile connectivity
Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) faces three problems for its commuters: overcrowding during peak hours, uneven frequency of buses, and last-mile connectivity.
The proposal is a two-tier mobile app that serves two kinds of people: daily commuters, and one-time or new commuters.
Design process
- Discover. Identify and understand the key challenges TSRTC commuters face: overcrowding, uneven bus frequency and last-mile connectivity.
- Define. Outline the specific problems and user needs the app aims to address, so solution development stays focused.
- Ideate. Brainstorm ideas and features that can solve the identified problems and improve the commuter experience.
- Design. Create intuitive designs for the mobile app that are easy to navigate and meet the needs of both daily and one-time commuters.
- Test. Test the app with real users to gather feedback, find issues and make improvements before launch.
Discovery phase
The discovery phase set out four activities:
- Surveys and interviews with TSRTC commuters to understand their pain points.
- Analysis of existing data on bus usage, peak hours and routes to find patterns.
- A study of similar transport apps to understand their strengths and weaknesses.
- Conversations with TSRTC officials and drivers to gather their insights and suggestions.
Key insights
During peak hours, significant overcrowding causes discomfort and delays. Uneven bus frequency leads to long waits. Last-mile connectivity remains a challenge, because commuters struggle to reach their final destination from the bus stop. There is also a strong demand for real-time tracking and schedule updates.
How the features answer the findings
Overcrowding at peak hours
Occupancy alerts and seat availability on bus cards and in notifications.
Uneven frequency and long waits
Real-time bus updates, with distance and minutes away on every bus card.
Last-mile connectivity
Route planning across bus, metro, MMTS and Airbus, and last-mile connectivity information in notifications.
Demand for real-time tracking and schedule updates
A live map with suggested routes, and personalized reminders built from a commuter's saved weekday schedule.
